Happy Bicentennial Birthday Abraham Lincoln. I'm not entirely sure you needed four bright shiny new pennies created in your honor when mostly all a penny does is sit in little dishes at cash registered "in case" you need a penny or if you have a penny change and don't feel like carrying it, you discard it into the little dish. But the US Mint went ahead anyhow and so today begins the launch of 4 new pennies...coin collectors everywhere...rejoice!!!
The U.S. one-cent coin is 19 millimeters in diameter and weighs 2.5 grams.
Since its beginning, the U.S. Mint has produced over 288.7 billion pennies. Lined up edge to edge, these pennies would circle the earth 137 times.
But really...besides eventually landing in the belly of the penguin bank that sits on top of my desk, a penny is only good to toss into a fountian or to throw over one's shoulder with a wish for...something marvelous to happen.
So far it hasn't worked real well for me...but someday...the common cent will produce a wish worthy of the 1 cent that was spent on it.
